The term mycorrhiza is made up of the words myco (Greek for 'fungus') and rhiza (Greek for 'plant root'). In nature, mycorrhizal fungi and plant roots enter into a symbiotic relationship for mutual benefit. Fossil finds prove that this partnership developed at the same time as the first primitive plants colonised the land around 500 million years ago.
