The Erlenmeyer flask, named after the chemist Emil Erlenmeyer (1825 - 1909), is - in contrast to the beaker - a vessel with a neck that narrows towards the top. Due to this tapered opening, the risk of liquids escaping uncontrollably when adding substances, swirling, stirring or boiling is much smaller with the Erlenmeyer flask.
