Ghost fungus - Omphalotus nidiformis - Grain spawn
Synonyms: Australian ghost mushroom
This mushroom is not suitable for human or animal consumption!
Illuminated mushroom for decorationOmphalotus nidiformis, the ghost mushroom, is best known for its bioluminescence (the ability to produce light). Its lamellae luminesce blue-greenish in the dark when the mushroom is fresh. This luminescence, known as ‘foxfire’, is triggered by the enzyme luciferase.
The funnel-shaped fruiting body can reach a diameter of up to 30 cm. The cream-coloured cap has orange, brown, purple or blue-black shades. The white to cream-coloured lamellae follow the stem down its entire length. The stalk can grow up to 8 cm long and tapers towards the base. The fungus feeds both parasitically and saprotrophically (dead organic litter). Its fruiting bodies are found on a variety of different dying or dead trees, usually growing in overlapping groups.
They can be mistaken for edible species of Pleurotus mushrooms - Omphalotus nidiformis, however, is, like most illuminated mushrooms, deadly poisonous!
