Easy mushroom cultivation - especially suitable for beginners!
The special thing about shiitake is that, unlike most other cultivated mushrooms, it requires less humidity. The greenhouse, which is otherwise mandatory for indoor cultivation, can therefore be replaced by a filter bag. The ready-made shiitake culture is removed from the filter bag for mycelium growth and placed on a plate or similar at room temperature (20 - 25°C). To prevent drying out, a larger bag is placed over the culture and moistened from the inside with a water atomizer (sprayer).
The Japanese name “shiitake” is made up of “take” (= mushroom) and “shii” (= pasania tree) and literally means “mushroom that grows on the tree”. Shiitake is native to Japan, Korea and China and its properties have been known to the population for around 2,000 years.
Its smell is strongly reminiscent of garlic and is due to an ingredient called lenthionine. The shiitake is considered the most popular edible mushroom after the button mushroom.
