Jack-O'-Lantern Mushroom- Omphalotus olearius - Grain spawn
Synonyms: False chanterelle, Dark olive tree funnel
This mushroom is not suitable for human or animal consumption!
Luminous mushroom for decoration. Omphalotus orearius, the olive funnel-shaped mushroom, is primarily known for its bioluminescence (the ability to produce light). Its lamellae luminesce blue-greenish in the dark when the mushroom is fresh. This luminescence, known as ‘foxfire’, is triggered by the enzyme luciferase.
The relatively thin-fleshed cap is yellow to strong orange in colour, with a rusty brown tinge on olive trees. It reaches a size of 6 - 10 cm. The cap is initially domed, then spreads out flat and finally depressed or funnel-shaped. The edge is often curled and the cap skin is smooth. The cap is often not centralised. The stem is 5 - 10 cm long, orange to foxy brown in colour and tapers towards the base.
They can be mistaken for edible chanterelles or chanterelles - Omphalotus olearius is, however, deadly poisonous, as are most illuminated mushrooms!
