Dunkler Ölbaumtrichterling - Omphalotus olearius - Mushroom patch
Synonyme: Leuchtender Ölbaumpilz
This mushroom is not for human or animal consumption!
Luminous mushroom for decoration! Omphalotus orearius, the olive funnel-shaped mushroom, is primarily known for its bioluminescence - the ability to produce light. Its gills luminesce blue-greenish in the dark when the mushroom is fresh. This luminescence, known as 'foxfire', is triggered by the enzyme luciferase.
The relatively thin-fleshed cap is yellow to vibrant orange in colour, with a rusty-brown hue on olive trees. It reaches a size of 6 - 10 cm. Initially domed, the cap then flattens out and eventually becomes depressed or funnel-shaped. The edge is often curled and the cap skin is smooth. The cap is frequently off centre. The stem is 5 - 10 cm long, ranging in colour from orange to foxy brown, tapering towards the base.
They can be mistaken with edible chanterelles or girolles - but, Omphalotus olearius is deadly poisonous, as are most luminescent mushrooms!
Mushroom patch is always made fresh on demand. Production time: 3 - 6 weeks.
